It started with a bedtime struggle

Hi, I'm Jimmy, the dad behind PatchO.

When I started PatchO, I wasn't trying to build a children's wellness brand. I was just trying to get my two-year old to go to sleep & stay asleep.

She was a wonderful, energetic little girl who loved animals, was obsessed with stickers and loved to play. Daytime went by relatively smoothly, but bedtime, on the other hand, was a different story.

Our 'wind down' was taking on average an hour and a half and even once she was asleep, was still waking up 2-3 times a night.

Bath. PJs. Brush Teeth. Book. Cuddles. More books. One more drink. Another cuddle. Another drink. 

You know how it goes. I love my daughter, but each night felt like a marathon. It was exhausting! 

I looked online for something simple and safe that could help with the daily bedtime wind-down as well as the nightly wake ups. That's when I came across essential oils & aromatherapy patches. These seemed like the perfect solution. A relaxing scent and something we could repeat and build into a routine. 

Unfortunately, traditional diffusers turned out to be a bit complex, and my daughter didn't take to the simpler aromatherapy patches that were currently on the market.   

Weeks went on, and the problem never went away, so me, with an engineering background, thought I could make something myself, something specifically tailored to her. If I was having this problem, surely other parents were too. So I started planning and experimenting.

I developed my own essential oil blend, created the PatchO Pals and turned the little patch into something my daughter could actually be excited about. I wanted it to be fun and engaging, something that sparked joy while also solving the problem. I thought back to my memories as a kid, and one of my fondest memories was opening collectables from Chip packets with my siblings. This inspired the fun collectible stickers included in each  PatchO pack. 

So after months of research, planning and hard work, I made it, and then we tried it.

The first week surprised us.

We started using PatchO as part of our bedtime routine. Bath. PJs.  Pick a Pal. Put on a PatchO. Teeth. Story. Cuddle.

Slowly, over that week, the routine stuck. She winded down much faster and our 1.5-hour bedtime wind-down shifted closer to 30 minutes! We also noticed she was waking less often during that first week, and she seemed happier in the mornings. 

It meant my wife and I were getting better sleep, and waking up happier too.

Now, I'm not going to tell you that one little patch will magically solve bedtime. I wish!

Every child is different, and we still have our nights. But for us, having this small tool really helped.

That's how PatchO began, and if it helped us, we hope it would help other families out there too!

From our bedtime to your everyday moments

What started as something I made for my daughter has grown into something much bigger.

We found that PatchO wasn't only useful at bedtime, it came in handy in other tricky moments too.  

There was the daycare drop-offs. The first day somewhere new. The long car rides. Travel. Afternoon meltdowns. Big feelings. And all those little moments where your child needs a bit of extra reassurance and you need a bit of extra patience.

PatchO is designed to fit into those moments without making them more complicated.

We realised, it wasn't just the scent that mattered. The little routine, the familiar cue and taking a breath together all seemed to play a part in why it was helpful.  

Pick a Pal. Put on a PatchO. Take a breath. Then keep going.

Why the Pals?

Because I wanted PatchO to feel like something kids could choose, not something being done to them.

My daughter loved animals, so the PatchO Pals were a natural fit. They're friendly little companions that give children something familiar to look forward to.

Which one are you taking today? Who is coming to bed tonight? Which Pal is going on the school bag?

Those little choices matter.

And, let's be honest, if you can make something helpful feel fun like a smelly sticker, you've probably made parenting just a tiny bit easier.

What PatchO is really about

I'm not interested in promising perfect calm. Kids are going to have big feelings.

Parents are going to lose their patience sometimes. Bedtime will occasionally go completely off the rails.

That's life.

PatchO is simply about creating a few more little moments of familiarity, connection and calm along the way.

A scent they recognise. A Pal they love. A routine they know. A reminder to breathe. Something small they can participate in. And a parent beside them.

Because the goal was never to dull her spark, it was to help us navigate the tricky moments so we could get back to enjoying the good ones together.  

From one Aussie family to yours

PatchO is proudly born in Western Australia and built from one dad's attempt to make bedtime a little easier. 

What started at our bedtime table now lives in homes, school bags, nappy bags and routines all over the place.

And that still feels a little surreal. We're just getting started.

What we believe

As PatchO has grown, I've tried to keep one thing at the centre of it: I want to make things that bring families together, make kids smile and make everyday moments a little more meaningful. That idea has grown into six things we come back to:

Play - Kids are kids. Support doesn't always have to be serious.

Adventure - Growing up is one big adventure. We want to make room for the fun parts.

Trust - If it's going on or around our kids, it needs to be something we can feel good about.

Connection - The bond you share with those you love is what makes life worthwhile, so let's continue to foster it.  

Heart - We make PatchO with the same care we'd want for our own kids.

Origin - PatchO started with one very ordinary parenting problem. We never want to forget that.
