Frequently Asked Questions

About Patcho

What are PatchO Comfort Companions?

PatchO Comfort Companions are playful, plant-based aromatherapy patches designed to support both parents and kids through daily ups and downs. Each patch features a friendly PatchO Pal and is infused with a gentle blend of essential oils to help create calmer routines, emotional ease, and moments of connection.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils extracted from plants to improve health and well-being. It typically involves inhaling the oils or applying them to the skin, and is often used to help manage stress, anxiety, and sleep issues.

How do the patches work?

PatchO patches use the power of smell — a safe and natural sense-based cue. When your child wears a patch, the infused essential oils slowly release their scent throughout the day, helping them feel grounded and supported during transitions, rest times, or play. When used with your presence, PatchO becomes an emotional cue for calm—giving you a shared sensory bridge when feelings are big. You can learn more about how it works at our Science page.

How does the PatchO blend work for both day and night?

The PatchO blend is crafted to bring balance, not sedation. Calming oils like Lavender, Roman Chamomile, and Benzoin help soothe big feelings and create a sense of calm, while bright, uplifting notes from Red Mandarin, Rose Geranium, and Lemongrass keep things cheerful and fresh — never sleepy. This gentle mix supports emotional regulation and sensory grounding, whether your child is winding down for rest or gearing up for the day’s adventures. You can learn more about how it works at our Science page.

How were the PatchO Pals chosen?

As an Australian brand, we took our inspiration straight from nature. Each PatchO Pal is a lovable Aussie animal with their own unique personality — like cuddly Hazel the Microbat or curious Ari the Superb Fairywren.

We chose a mix of lesser-known native animals to make them feel a little more special and one-of-a-kind. Each Pal was thoughtfully designed to spark imagination and connection — helping your child feel seen, supported, and understood, no matter what their day holds.

Do the different PatchO Pals have different scents?

All PatchO Pals share the same gentle, calming blend! The PatchO Pals aren’t tied to specific scents. Instead, they’re here to spark imagination and emotional connection. it’s up to your child to choose the one that feels right for their moment. Some kids love Chad the Aussie Water Dragon when they need courage, or Pat the Platypus when it’s time to unwind — but there are no rules here. Just peel, stick, and let your day unfold, with a little help from nature (and a caring Pal by your side)

The scent stays the same, so the emotional safety and sensory familiarity stay consistent too. That’s what helps build calm, comfort, and confidence through routines and transitions.

Can adults use them too?

You bet! While PatchO is designed for use with little ones, and as an emotional support tool for parents, grown-ups have been known to pop one on themselves too. It can be a lovely way to share the ritual with your child, model calm, and give yourself a gentle pause before heading into the chaos of the day. They’re calming for all ages 2+.

If you are pregnant or experience sensitivities, we recommend consulting your GP before use and refer to our Safe Use FAQ section below.

Essential Oils & Ingredients

What are they made from?

We’re pretty picky about what goes near our kids too — that’s why PatchO patches are made with a gentle blend of thoughtfully selected natural essential oils:

  • Red Mandarin oil extracted from the skin (peel) of the mandarin fruit – Cheerful and comforting, like a soft burst of sunshine. Gentle enough for little ones and often found in bath products.
  • Lemongrass oil extracted from the tall, tropical lemongrass plant – Bright and energising, like a fresh start. Known to refresh the senses and help shift moods, often used to promote mental clarity.
  • Lavender oil extracted from the purple lavender flower – Calming and relaxing, like a warm, snuggly hug. Often used in baby sleep sprays and lotions.
  • Roman Chamomile oil extracted from the white chamomile flower – Soothing and settling, like a reassuring cuddle. One of the most baby-friendly oils, used in colic and teething blends.
  • Rose Geranium oil extracted from the pink geranium flower and leaves – Balancing and uplifting, like riding a smooth wave. Common in natural skincare for emotional support.
  • Benzoin oil extracted from the sticky sap of a benzoin tree – Warm and reassuring, like a gentle hug at the end of a long day. Often used to create a sense of comfort, ease, and emotional safety.

The oils are blended together and infused into a soft, breathable, eco friendly, non-woven fabric that sticks to clothing (not skin). That means no mess, no fuss, and no harsh stuff to worry about.

What do they smell like?

Our patches have a soft, calming scent that’s gentle on little noses — no overpowering perfumes here!

You’ll first notice a fresh burst of sweet Red Mandarin, followed by the soothing floral notes of Lavender. As it settles, a soft touch of Roman Chamomile and Rose Geranium adds warmth and balance. A hint of Lemongrass brings a light, uplifting freshness, while Benzoin adds a smooth, cozy base with a touch of vanilla-like sweetness.

The overall scent is natural, comforting, and lasts up to 8 hours. It’s like a gentle garden breeze — light and peaceful, designed to support calm without overstimulation, whether your child is winding down for rest or powering through their big day.

Do you use any nasties?

No nasties here! No synthetic fragrances, no harsh chemicals, and no preservatives. Just a simple, safe blend of essential oils in a breathable patch — nothing more.

Are the essential oils in the patches diluted?

Great question — and one we’re glad you asked! 💛

Each PatchO Comfort Companion contains a tiny, controlled amount of pure essential oils. Because our patches work through gentle aromatherapy via passive diffusion, the oils don’t go directly on your child’s skin — so there’s no need for dilution with a carrier oil, like you would use with a roller or massage oil.

That said, we know how important safety is when it comes to little ones. Experts like Tisserand and Young recommend a 1–2% dilution for indirect inhalation methods like active diffusers or room sprays — but PatchO patches are different. Our essential oils are:
✅ Time-released slowly over several hours
✅ Kept close to the body, not diffused into a whole room
✅ Delivered in very low quantities though passive diffusion.

Our blend has been thoughtfully formulated with gentle, kid-friendly oils at soothing levels — ideal for little noses and big feelings.

You can feel confident knowing:
✅ Each patch contains a very small, controlled amount of oil
✅ The blend is 100% natural — no harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances
✅ Nothing touches the skin — just a comforting scent released throughout the day.

Why does PatchO contain Benzoin and Lemongrass?

You may have seen some information around the cautions around Lemongrass and Benzoin use for young kids.

Our patches are designed in line with industry aromatherapy guidelines (Tisserand & Young’s Essential Oil Safety (2nd ed.), NAHA & IFPA) and have carefully selected every oil in the PatchO blend to create a gentle but emotionally effective aroma — not just a pleasant smell.

Why we use Benzoin:

  • Sweet, vanilla-like scent
  • Soothing and grounding for anxious or overstimulated little ones
  • Acts as a natural fixative, helping the scent last longer and stay balanced

Why we use Lemongrass:

  • Fresh, clarifying scent that supports emotional uplift
  • Adds lightness to the blend and gentle antimicrobial benefits.

Both are used at low, safe concentrations for children aged 2+ via passive inhalation only —  not direct contact or ingestion. Without them, the blend would lose balance, depth, and staying power.

You can learn more on our dedicated PatchO safety page.

Safe Use & Age Guidance

How should I use the PatchO patch safely?

Here's how you can use PatchO safely:
✅ Peel and stick the patch onto your child’s clothing, ideally near the collarbone or upper chest (not on skin).
🧍 Use one patch at a time.
⏱  Start with shorter wear times (1–2 hours) for younger children or first-time users.
🚫 Discontinue use if irritation, rash, coughing, or any discomfort occurs.
👶 Use only with active adult supervision.
🐾 Store patches out of reach of children and pets.
💨 Use in well ventilated spaces. Avoid placing under tight clothing or blankets — airflow helps diffusion.
👪 Use alongside your child — your example of compliance, calm, and breathing helps them feel safer and more attuned.

You can learn more about PatchO Safety here and see our How to Use Page to help you get started.

What age is PatchO suitable for?

PatchO is designed for children aged 2 years and older. We’ve chosen gentle, well-researched essential oils in low concentrations, delivered through a slow-release patch that’s worn on clothing — not the skin.

For children under 2, we recommend waiting. Young children have developing respiratory and immune systems, which can be more sensitive to certain essential oils, including Lemongrass and Benzoin. Please consult your pediatrician for alternatives more suitable for infants.

Adults should always supervise use and discontinue if any signs of sensitivity arise.

Refer to our dedicated PatchO Safety page to learn more.

Should I do a patch test first?

Yes — we recommend a Patch Test:

👃 Start with a sniff test – Open the bag and let your child smell the patch before use.
⏱  Shorter durations – Begin with just 1–2 hours and observe.
👕 Apply to outer layers – Stick the patch to a cardigan or jacket instead of a t-shirt.
📒 Keep a little patch diary – Note how your child responds, emotionally and physically. Observe for any signs of irritation or strong reaction.

If all is well, you're good to go.

What if my child has allergies, asthma, or sensitive skin?

Many families with sensitivities use PatchO safely since it doesn’t touch the skin. That said, this is what we recommend:

✅ Do a Patch Test first
✅ Start with shorter use (1 - 2 hours).
✅ Apply to outer layers of clothing, not near the face.
✅ Monitor your child closely.
✅ Consulting your GP or health care provider, particularly if you're unsure — your comfort and peace of mind come first.

As always, trust your instincts — every child is different. Our patches are an emotional support tool only, not a replacement for medical care when needed.

Is PatchO safe around babies or under-2 siblings?

If your child under 2 is nearby, you can still use PatchO with care:

Tips for safer use in mixed-age households:

  • Place the patch on the older child’s outer layer (e.g., jacket or top)
  • Avoid close proximity to an infant’s nose or face
  • Do not co-sleep with a child wearing the patch
  • Use only one patch at a time
  • Monitor for any signs of irritation or discomfort

If younger siblings are around, applying patches mindfully helps keep the space emotionally safe for them too—and gives you a clearer moment of emotional intention.

If your baby has asthma or known scent sensitivities, speak with your healthcare provider before using essential oils in shared spaces.

Is PatchO safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

PatchO Comfort Companions are designed for use on children's clothing only — but we know many parents are wearing the hats of caregiver, nurturer, and snuggler all at once.

All essential oils used in PatchO are selected with care and safety in mind. Based on internationally recognised safety references (including Essential Oil Safety by Tisserand & Young), our blend is considered safe for use around pregnant and breastfeeding adults when used as directed.

Because PatchO uses passive aromatherapy — not topical application — and only very small amounts of essential oils, it poses very low risk of irritation or systemic absorption for nearby adults.

If you're pregnant (especially in the first trimester) or highly sensitive to scent, we recommend:

  • Using PatchO in a well-ventilated space.
  • Avoiding extended close proximity (e.g., avoid sleeping directly against the patch).
  • Discontinuing use if you experience any discomfort.
  • Consulting your GP or obstetrician, particularly if you're unsure — your comfort and peace of mind come first.

How often can I use the patches?

For most kids 4+, daily use is fine. For toddlers 2–4, use occasionally for transitions or tricky moments.  As with all aromatherapy, less is more with little ones. Start slow, offer scent breaks, and let your child guide the way.

Rather than reaching for the more patches, also remember that, it helps if parents co-regulate with your child. By using the patch alongside your child - your example of compliance, calm, and breathing helps them feel safer and more attuned.

Also, PatchO supports emotional presence, but isn’t a substitute for comforting from a caring parent — emotional attunement is still the most powerful support.

Can I use PatchO overnight?

Yes — but start with shorter use first and monitor. Many families use PatchO during bedtime, naps, or travel. For younger children or first-time users, test for 1–2 hours before extended use. If unsure, speak with your healthcare provider.

What does sensitisation mean, and how can I recognise it?

Sensitisation is when the body becomes more reactive to an ingredient after repeated exposure — unlike an allergy, which is immediate.

Signs of sensitisation or irritation:

  • Rash or redness (especially if the patch brushed skin).
  • Sneezing or coughing.
  • Headache, fussiness.
  • Rare but serious: wheezing or shortness of breath.

If your child shows any of these signs, discontinue use immediately and consult a medical professional if symptoms persist.

How can I tell the difference between irritation, sensitisation, respiratory, and allergic reactions?

Here's a summary outlining the reaction type, common signs, and what to do, . If in doubt, seek medical attention.

  • Mild Irritation - Rubbing eyes, slight sneezing, mild fussiness. What to do: Remove patch, monitor.
  • Sensitisation - Rash, repeated sneezing/coughing, hives. What to do: Discontinue use, consult GP.
  • Respiratory - Wheezing, coughing fits, shortness of breath. What to do: Seek medical attention.
  • Allergic Reaction - Swelling, itching, vomiting, rash on face. What to do: Call doctor immediately.

Are there any long-term side effects?

There are no known long-term side effects however if your child does shows any signs of sensitivity — like fussiness or discomfort — simply pause use and try again later. If the symptoms continue to occur, discontinue use and consult your GP.

In the rare chance that you experience symptoms like sensitisation, respiratory or allergic reactions, seek medical attention.

For children with medical conditions or known sensitivities, please check with your healthcare provider before use.

As always, trust your instincts — every child is different. Our patches are an emotional support tool only, not a replacement for medical care when needed.

Also, PatchO supports emotional presence, but isn’t a substitute for comforting from a caring parent — emotional attunement is still the most powerful support.

Are they suitable for children with sensory-sensitivty or neurodivergnce?

Many families with sensory-sensitive or neurodivergent children find PatchO helpful, especially as part of a visual and scent-based routine. Since they don’t touch the skin and are gentle in both scent and texture, they’re a great low-pressure tool — but every child is different, so it’s always good to try with care.

Is PatchO safe to use around pets?

PatchO is made for kids — not pets. Because our patches are worn on clothing and use gentle, plant-based essential oils, they’re unlikely to cause issues when used as directed. However, animals — especially cats and small dogs — can be more sensitive to scents than humans.

If your pet seems bothered around the patch, we recommend discontinuing use nearby and speaking with your vet for peace of mind.

How to use

Where should I stick the patch?

Anywhere on your child’s clothing — we recommend the an area closer to the nose like the chest (on a shirt or pyjama top) so the scent can be gently inhaled. You can also try placing one on a backpack, collar, or comfort toy (just not directly on skin).

How long do the patches last?

Each patch offers scent support for up to 8 hours, depending on airflow and activity. Many families use one for the school day or bedtime and then peel it off when no longer needed.

Are the patches reusable?

No, each patch is designed for single use only. To maintain hygiene and scent quality, we recommend peeling it off and discarding it after use.

Do the patches leave a residue or mark?

Nope! Our patches are made to be mess-free and should peel off cleanly from most fabrics. If you’re ever unsure, you can test one on a less visible spot first.

Can the oils be absorbed through clothing?

PatchO works through passive inhalation, not transdermal absorption. The small amount of oil doesn't penetrate clothing and is not absorbed into the bloodstream like skin-applied products.

How does PatchO compare to diffusers or roll-ons?

PatchO offers gentle, low-dose aromatherapy without the risks of mess, spills, overexposure, or skin contact — unlike diffusers or roll-ons.

PatchO also empowers parents to anchor calm moments without devices or routines.

Can you give me examples of when I should use my patches?

Head to our "How To Use" page for a full guide which includes visual info-graphics for occasions and moods.

What if PatchO doesn’t seem to work?

PatchO isn’t a magic solution — it’s a gentle tool to help children feel seen and supported. Some days it helps settle big emotions quickly; other days it’s just a small moment of calm for you and your child. Either way, it’s still helping your child feel understood.

Product Info & Extras

How many patches come in a pack?

Each pack of Comfort Companions comes with 36 soft eco non-woven fabric patches infused with our essential oil blend.

What size are the patches? Will they work on all clothes?

The patches are circular and 28mm in diameter. They have an adhesive back (like a sticker) which should stick to most clothing, however in some fabrics that are highly textured (i.e. velvet or suede), stretchy (i.e. spandex, lycra), have a rough surface, or have high silicone content may not stick as well.

Do the stickers come with every pack?

Yes! Each pack includes 3 fun collectible PatchO Pal stickers — kids can decorate lunchboxes, notebooks, or anything they like. It’s our way of bringing a little extra joy into your day.

Where are PatchO patches made?

At PatchO, we’re all about transparency, quality, and care — just like you'd expect from a brand made for families.

Our patches are lovingly designed right here in Australia and responsibly manufactured and packaged in China by our accredited supplier that holds both ISO 9001 (Quality Management System) and BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) certifications. This means our partners meet high global standards for quality management and ethical business practices, including fair labor conditions.

All orders ship from our WA-based warehouse, and our customer care team is local too — so if you ever need support, you're in good hands.

Are PatchO components recyclable?

We use eco-friendly non-woven fabric for our patches, which can be recycled in some areas. Our ziplock bags are usually recyclable too, but recycling rules vary depending on where you live — we recommend checking with your local council to be sure.

Our collectible stickers are made from polypropylene (PP) plastic, which sadly isn’t accepted in most household recycling bins here in Australia. The plastic backing on the stickers and patches also needs to go in the general waste.

The little insert cards are made from cardboard and can be popped straight in your paper recycling bin.

We’re always looking for ways to improve our packaging and make it kinder to the planet — thanks for helping us on this journey!

Why do some PatchO Pals look a little different from the packaging?

Great question! This first batch of PatchO patches features early versions of our Pal designs — you might notice a few little quirks, like a bigger smile or a stretchier belly. We think it adds to their charm! Future batches will reflect their updated look, but these originals are just as loveable and full of comfort.
